Points & Quadrants
The coordinate plane is where algebra and geometry meet — every shape becomes a set of points you can measure and transform. It starts with two simple ideas: a point is named by an ordered pair , and the two axes divide the plane into four quadrants. Get fluent with both and the rest of coordinate geometry has a place to stand.

What & why
A point's address is an ordered pair : the first number is how far right or left (the -coordinate), the second is how far up or down (the -coordinate). Order matters — and are different places.
The - and -axes cross at the origin and cut the plane into four quadrants, numbered counterclockwise from the top right with Roman numerals. Each has its own sign pattern:
- Quadrant I · Quadrant II
- Quadrant III · Quadrant IV
A point on an axis (an or of ) belongs to no quadrant.
Watch how it works
Read the signs and the quadrant follows. is right and up — Quadrant I. is left and up — Quadrant II.
(4, 7) sits in Quadrant I; (−5, 3) in Quadrant II. The signs are the whole story: a negative pushes you left, a negative pushes you down. Track those two signs and you can name any point's quadrant without plotting it.
