Substituting into a Formula
If there's one move the Geometry Regents asks for over and over, it's this: substitute given values into a formula and evaluate. Area, perimeter, the Pythagorean theorem, slope — every one is a formula waiting for numbers. Do the substitution carefully (especially with negatives) and the rest is the order of operations you already know. This card builds that care into a habit.

What & why
A formula is an expression with letters standing in for numbers you'll fill in later. waits for a length and a width; waits for two legs. Substituting just means replacing each letter with its value.
The one place it goes wrong is signs. When a variable is negative, wrap it in parentheses as you substitute — becomes , not a loose . That keeps reading as and reading as , not . Substitute with parentheses, then evaluate by the order of operations.
