Simplifying Expressions
Before you solve an equation or read a formula, it helps to simplify the expressions inside it. Two moves do almost all the work: combining like terms (adding the pieces that match) and the distributive property (clearing parentheses). Master both and longer problems stop looking intimidating — they just need tidying first.

Like terms have the exact same variable part. and are like terms; and are like terms; but and are not — you can't combine them. Combining like terms just means adding their coefficients: , while the lone numbers add separately.
