Slope

How steep is a line, and which way does it lean? Slope answers both with one number: the rise (vertical change) divided by the run (horizontal change) between any two points on the line. It builds directly on points and quadrants — you read two points off the grid, then compare how much yy changes to how much xx changes.

  1. What & why

    Pick any two points on a line. The slope is how much it climbs for how much it moves across:

    The number carries two pieces of meaning at once:

    • Sign — the direction. A line rising left-to-right has positive slope; one falling left-to-right has negative slope.
    • Size — the steepness. A slope of 33 is steeper than 12\tfrac{1}{2}.

    Two special lines: a horizontal line never rises, so Δy=0\Delta y = 0 and the slope is 00. A vertical line never runs, so Δx=0\Delta x = 0 — and since you can't divide by zero, its slope is undefined.

  2. Watch how it works

    Take (0,0)(0, 0) and (4,2)(4, 2). Going from the first point to the second, yy rises by 22 and xx runs by 44:

    m=ΔyΔx=2040=24=12m = \frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} = \frac{2 - 0}{4 - 0} = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{1}{2}

    The order of the points doesn't matter as long as you stay consistent: from BB to AA the rise is 2-2 and the run is 4-4, and 24\tfrac{-2}{-4} is still 12\tfrac{1}{2}.

    When the line falls, the slope comes out negative. From (0,5)(0, 5) to (2,1)(2, 1) the rise is 15=41 - 5 = -4 over a run of 22, so m=42=2m = \tfrac{-4}{2} = -2 — a steep downhill line.

  3. Reason through one together

    Find Δy\Delta y and Δx\Delta x, divide, and watch the sign. Predict before you check.

    Make a prediction: Find the slope of the line through (1, 4) and (3, 0).
